Cyanotype Workshop @ The Sea House

Image: Cyanotype workshop, Encinitas, 2024 (Photo by Chelsea Mayer)

Join Oriana Poindexter at The Sea House for an interactive cyanotype workshop. Learn this early alternative photographic process and use organic materials to create your own cyanotype prints using photo chemistry techniques first developed in the 1840s.

The resulting prints are records of the state of the ocean and your creative process on that particular day, recorded in the blue and white palette of the sea itself. Cyanotype is an alternative photographic process used to create photographic prints in the distinctive shade of Prussian blue and white without the use of a camera, exposed with the sun and developed in water.

This workshop will teach you the fundamentals of the cyanotype process, its history, and will culminate with each participant creating at least three original cyanotype prints - usually something frame worthy.

The first portion of the workshop will involve an introduction, demonstration, and selection of materials, and the second portion will be a printing session. If you have materials you’d like to bring to use for printing (sentimental objects, dried botanicals, etc), please feel free to bring them.

A percentage of proceeds from this workshop will benefit Sea Trees. Registration is required via a ticket purchase. All ages are welcome. Children below the age of 16 must be accompanied by a ticketed parent or guardian. Workshop registration is non-refundable. For details, please read our policy here.

LAM Art + Nature | Portrait of Place Community Art Workshop with Artist Oriana Poindexter

Join Laguna Art Museum at the Main Beach Cobblestones for a community art project led by artist and scientist Oriana Poindexter, who seamlessly blends art and science to showcase the ocean's beauty. In celebration of LAM’s Art + Nature initiative, the collaborative artwork will embody a "portrait of place" by using historic photo techniques to create a portrait of the marine ecosystem of Laguna Beach. Participants will study ocean specimens with Oriana and collaboratively create detailed artworks that celebrate underwater life. This project provides a special chance to contribute to a collective view of the ocean and deepen our connection with it.

The collaborative art produced during the workshop will be exhibited at LCAD’s Downtown Gallery as part of Oriana Poindexter’s exhibition Blue Forest Portraits through November 7-24.
