Sunday July 12, 2026, from 10:00am - 2:00 pm
Join photographer and marine scientist Oriana Poindexter at Photographer's Eye Gallery for a cyanotype workshop. We'll begin with a guided walkthrough of Field Notes, exploring the photographic and scientific thinking behind the work — how observation, documentation, and experimentation inform Oriana's practice at the intersection of ecology and image-making.
From there, we get our hands in the chemistry. Taking advantage of Photographer's Eye on-site darkroom, participants will mix and coat their own cyanotype emulsion — sensitizing paper in the darkroom before heading outside to expose in the sun. We'll experiment with printing on provided pre-treated fabric as well.
Cyanotype rewards curiosity and a willingness to be surprised. Bring objects, negatives, botanicals, or anything you've been wanting to contact-print — or work entirely with what's provided (probably mostly fresh seaweed!). All experience levels are welcome, and those already working in analog photography will find a lot of familiar instincts apply. Participants with existing cyanotype experience are also welcome to come with specific questions about expanding or deepening their practice.
What we'll cover:
Mixing and applying cyanotype chemistry
Sensitizing your own substrates in the darkroom
Sunlight Exposure techniques
Developing, rinsing, and stabilizing prints
Printing on paper and fabric
How to continue the practice at home with minimal setup
