Newport, Oregon: Cyanotype Workshop

$95.00

Small Group Cyanotype Workshop

Monday, August 11, 2025; 12 - 2 pm

Location: Hatfield Marine Science Center, 2030 SE Marine Science Dr, Newport, Oregon 97365

Workshop Description:

Join Artist in Residence Oriana Poindexter at Hatfield Marine Science Center for an interactive cyanotype workshop. This event will also include a walkthrough of Oriana’s exhibit, Cascadia Coast Exposures, followed by an hour and a half of instruction and art-making.

Learn this early alternative photographic process and use seaweeds native to the Oregon coast that Oriana has collected over the course of her residency at Hatfield. You will create your own cyanotype prints using photo chemistry techniques first developed in the 1840s.

This workshop will teach you the fundamentals of the cyanotype process, its history, and will culminate with each participant creating three original cyanotype prints - usually something frame worthy.

The cyanotype workshop with Oriana was the best 2 hours I’ve spent in a long time... Oriana is a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and inspiring leader. The workshop was worth the price. I’m ready for another experience.

- Cyanotype Workshop Participant, June 4, 2022

The first portion of the workshop will involve an introduction, demonstration and selection of materials. The second portion will be a printing session. If you have materials you’d like to bring to use for printing (sentimental objects, dried botanicals, etc), please feel free to bring them.

The resulting prints are records of the state of the ocean and your creative process on that particular day, recorded in the blue and white palette of the sea itself. Cyanotype is an alternative photographic process used to create photographic prints in the distinctive shade of Prussian blue and white without the use of a camera, exposed with the sun and developed in water.

Registration fee includes all materials and instruction, as well as light refreshments and seaweed snacks. Once registration is complete your spot is reserved and you’ll begin receiving event reminders. All ages are welcome, but children below the age of 16 must be accompanied by a ticketed parent or guardian.

Workshop registration is non-refundable. For details, please read our policy here.

Discounted registration is available for Hatfield-affiliated students and staff, please send an email to studio@orianapoindexter.com to access.
