Ebb and Flow: Giant Kelp Forests through Art, Science and the Archives
Beginning January 12, 2024, the UC San Diego Library will host Ebb and Flow: Giant Kelp Forests through Art, Science and the Archives, an exhibit curated by Oriana Poindexter ’15, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) alumna and artist. The exhibit displays works created as a result of continued observation of the local giant kelp forest environment by artists, scientists and community members over the past 134 years.

JEFFREY B. GRAHAM PERSPECTIVES ON OCEAN SCIENCE LECTURE
Join biologist Mohammad Sedarat and artist Oriana Poindexter in an exploration of their collaboration on the Aquarium’s new art exhibition, Hold Fast, an immersive journey through our local giant kelp forests. Learn how their unique perspectives are combined to provide visitors with insight into climate change through the lens of art.

Surfing Madonna Oceans Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Encinitas, California and was officially formed in 2013 by Robert Nichols and Mark Patterson (artist of the Surfing Madonna mosaic). Our intention is to partner with local arts groups and recognize the excellence of local artists and promote the arts through active engagement between artists and the community.

The 3rd annual Santa Barbara Surf Film Festival is set to take place June 9th & 10th at the historic Lobero Theatre in beautiful downtown Santa Barbara, CA.
#SBSFF2023 will celebrate Santa Barbara’s rich surf history and diverse storytelling styles of filmmakers, artists, shapers and surfers who started it all. Hold Fast will showcase a wide variety of artists and entrepreneurs who celebrate kelp and seaweed. The event will be a night market featuring printmakers, sculptors, ceramic artists, live tattooing and painting, digital artwork, and an immersive kelp video as well as drinks, snacks, and food vendors.

In celebration of the Central Library's newest exhibition Good Natured, we are partnering with Wildcoast.org in hosting a special panel discussion titled "Climate Change through the Lens of Art + Science" that invites local scientists as well as artist featured in the exhibition to exchange ideas and opinions on the ways the arts will have a very important role in finding solutions to address our current poly-crisis (ecology, economy, energy, equity).
