Small Group Cyanotype Workshop

Saturday January 20, 2024, from 10:00am - 12:00 pm

Location: Carlsbad City Library, 1775 Dove Ln, Carlsbad, CA

All ages are welcome. Children below the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Join Oriana Poindexter for an interactive cyanotype workshop. Learn this early alternative photographic process and use organic materials to create your own cyanotype prints using photo chemistry techniques first developed in the 1840s.

The resulting prints are records of the state of the ocean and your creative process on that particular day, recorded in the blue and white palette of the sea itself. Cyanotype is an alternative photographic process used to create photographic prints in the distinctive shade of Prussian blue and white without the use of a camera, exposed with the sun and developed in water.

This workshop will teach you the fundamentals of the cyanotype process, its history, and will culminate with each participant creating three original cyanotype prints - usually something frame worthy.

The first portion of the workshop will involve an introduction, demonstration, and selection of materials, and the second portion will be a printing session. If you have materials you’d like to bring to use for printing (sentimental objects, dried botanicals, etc), please feel free to bring them.

This workshop is provided with support from Campana Studios and the Cultural Arts Department of the City of Carlsbad. Campana Studios is a nonprofit, grassroots organization that creates platforms for visual artist to engage within our community. Learn more about Campana Studios at www.campanastudios.org or on instagram @campanastudios.

Cyanotype Printmaking requires specific materials and chemicals which have an impact on the costs of this workshop.  Campana Studios believes strongly that visual art programming should be accessible to all members of our community and that our teaching artists should be paid a fair and just wage for their work. To offset the cost impact of this workshop, Campana Studios is offering two scholarships for this class. If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please email a short, written statement (250 words) explaining why you would like to take this workshop to tchapin@campanastudios.org. Please send by Jan 1st. We will notify you of your scholarship status by Jan 5th.
